Over here in the Portland area we have one of the worlds' largest used bookstores.  They have about seven locations around the area, but better than that have some giant warehouses filled with used books.  Star Wars usually gets it's own section, and often has a nearly complete stock of first editions dating back to the movie novelizations from the late 70s.  Someone once gave me a first edition Star Wars: A New Hope, which in any other area would be an extreme rarity.  At Powell's they usually have about 10 copies of it and can't get rid of them!  Powell's is where I get all my Star Wars Graphic Novels and RPG books.

EDIT:  Oh neat, an original Star Wars  for $125.00.  I've heard they usually go for upwards of $900.00.  But that's first editions.  I wonder if this is a first edition?

EDIT 2: I guess it is.  Just found a 1978 1st edition hardcover for $80, not in a locked case. 

But I think what I'm really after is the 1976 edition.

Portland might not have much in terms of world renown and tourist things to see, but Powells certainly tops most lists  ;)

A lot of people travel thousands of miles just to shop there!  It's been a great place to feed my Star Wars RPG: 2nd Edition addiction!  Dark Horse Comics is also in town and does some neat stuff.  They recently donated an entire collection of their comics to the local University's library, and often make the public libraries plentiful of their material.

It should say in the publication details usually located around the title page.  You could also check online (lots of details on Wookieepedia  ;D )

Weird, I've heard a lot of cool things about Portland.  Never been there tho.

It's wet.  And cold.  Did I mention wet?  We sorta get overshadowed by Seattle and San Francisco, despite Portland being a major metropolis.

On most books it will have a list of numbers formatted like this on the copyright and publication information page:

10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1

or this:

2 4 6 8 10 9 7 5 3 1

If there's a 1, that means it's a first edition.

Either that or it will just say "First Edition"

Found a 1st Edition of Coruscant Nights: Patterns of Force that is relatively free of defects.  Yay!
